Kawakawa is one of the most distinctive New Zealand native plants. It was one of the most important healing herbs in Rongoa Maori.
Kawakawa (Macropiper Excelsum) is known as the "Pharmacy of the Forest". The small tree, with distinctive heart shaped leaves, is a significant and sacred plant to Maori.
Among it's many healing properties, it is reputed to soothe insect bites and stings, skin rashes, poor circulation, bruises, wounds, burns, aches and pains.
I am continually surprised at the wide range of problems that Kawakawa seems to able to remedy, and receive positive feedback on a regular basis, including treatment for eczema, arthritis, burns, as an insect repellant, and for leg pains.
